(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat – The Ministry of Health has advised Moroccans who will the Hajj to take preventative measures to avoid contracting cholera during their trip.
The ministry noted that while the possibility of contracting cholera remained small due to measures made by Saudi authorities, it was important to follow certain steps to "prevent the emergence and spread" of the disease.
Advice given by the ministry, includes:
Paying attention to personal hygiene, such as washing hands with water and soap before and after preparing food or using the toilet
Only drinking water that is bottled or given in controlled locations by authorities
Washing fruit and vegetables before consumption
Disposing waste safely in designated locations
Refraining from eating open food or food that was prepared in questionable conditions or conditions that don't respect health
The ministry is sending Moroccan health missions to accompany the pilgrims and is encouraging any Moroccan who falls ill to speak to them, especially those suffering symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or exhaustion.
Cholera is a contagious, bacterial disease that can kill within hours if untreated, as it affects the digestive system and can quickly lead to dehydration. People experiencing mild symptoms can be treated with oral rehydration solutions, while those in with more severe symptoms will need "rapid treatment with intravenous fluids and antibiotics," notes the .
Hajj dates depend on the moon, but it has been predicted that this year Hajj will start on August 30 and finish on September 4.
