(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat – The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) in Morocco has denied rumors that the detained Rif protest movement activist Nasser Zafzafi was injected with a substance to cause pain.
Zafzafi is currently under preventive detention in Ain Sebaa 1 prison in Casablanca.
Rumors spread on social media claiming the prominent member of the Hirak protest movement in the region o fAl Hoceima was injected with a unnamed pain-inducing substance to cause pain.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the administration dismissed the claims as "stupid allegations" and "a figment of malicious imagination" by those who spread them as if "they were reality."
The administration added that prisoners are treated with responsibility and in accordance with the law.
The release further noted that Zafzafi is "in good health" and isnot receiving any treatment. It also accused "those who spread those lies" of seeking to "undermine the credibility" of the penitentiary in whichhe is incarcerated.
It added that this "kind of incitement" is "dangerous" and serves those who have "suspicious agendas."
Zafzafi had been the most prominent leading member of Hirak since the protest movement started in late October 2016 following the death of local fish vendor MouhcineFikri in Al Hoceima.
Even after his arrest on May 29, Zafzafi kept making the headlines. Earlier in July, a leaked video showing the leading Hirakmember during a medical examination during his detention created uproar among supporters of the Hirak.
The Penitentiary Administration denied the video was shot in prison. Speculations pointed to the headquarters of the National Brigade of Judiciary Police (BNPJ) as the potential place where the clip was filmed since Zafzafi was detained there during investigations with him following his arrest.
