MoAF book to profile over 1,050 species of fish found in Omani waters

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Marine Sciences and Fisheries Centre under the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) is coming out with a book that will profile over 1,050 species of fish found in Omani waters. The book will be published in English.

Dr Juma Mohammed al Mamry, marine biology expert at the Marine Sciences and Fisheries Centre who is compiling data for the book, said, 'We will have details of over 1,050 species of fish caught in Omani waters. It will have data on both bony and cartilaginous fish. This book will be a reference guide on fish species found in Omani waters.

The book will help researchers, scientists and students dealing in fish studies. It will even help tourists who want to know about the types of fish found in Omani waters.'

He said that last such books on fish species were published in 1995. 'We had two books published on fish species found in the Sea of Oman. We have taken inputs from those works as well which will give us a detailed insight of different species of fish. Many fish varieties enlisted in the new book have Omani names. Some of them have even been found for the first time in Omani waters.'

Dr Mamry said that fish identification and taxonomy is a cause of concern for Oman. 'We now want to have database of all animals and plants found in the Omani environment.'

Giving an insight of the book, he said, 'We have details like ribbonfish. This fish is known for its slim, ribbon-like appearance. It is rarely seen as its lives in deep waters. So many fishes migrate from one area to the other. If you see a fish in the Arabian Sea one day you will find the same in the Sea of Oman the other day.

'We will keep publishing papers of any new species found either in the Sea of Oman or the Arabian Sea.'
