Syria's wheat crop grows by 12pct to 1.8mn tons this year

(MENAFN) Syria's this year wheat crop has enhanced to 1.8mn tons, 12 percent higher than 2016 record low, while less than half of pre-war production averages.

Moreover, the Syrian agriculture ministry's wheat production predict puts this year crop higher at 2mn tons.

The country used to generate 4mn tons in a good year and was able to export 1.5mn tons, while the fall in output put President al-Assad's government under pressure to import the grain.

However, Syria's wheat harvest fell to its lowest level in 27 years in 2016, with some predictions putting it as low as 1.3mn tons.
