Parliament was informed today that Sri Lankans in Qatar have not been affected by the crisis in the Middle East.

Foreign Minister Ravi Karunanayake told Parliament he was in touch with the Governments of Qatar and other countries in the Middle East.

He said Sri Lankans employed in Qatar have not been affected by the crisis and that the Foreign Ministry is keeping a close watch on the developments.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain severed their ties with Qatar earlier this month, accusing it of supporting terrorism, opening up the worst rift in years among some of the most powerful states in the Arab world.

The coordinated move dramatically escalated a dispute over Qatar's support of the Muslim Brotherhood, the world's oldest Islamist movement, and adds accusations that Doha even backs the agenda of regional arch-rival Iran. (Colombo Gazette)
