SHARJAH, 25th April, 2017 (WAM) -- The UAE Board on Books for Young people, UAEBBY, the national branch of the International Board on Books for Young People, has launched its ‘Read, Dream, Create' Creative Writing Competition for children and young adults.

The event was held on the side-lines of the ongoing Sharjah Children's Reading Festival, SCRF 2017, which runs until 29th April at Expo Centre, Sharjah.

The competition aims to provide the UAE's youth with a platform from where they can express their emotions and share their ideas through creative prose and illustrative art. The larger goal is to foster a love of reading and writing in children, in the process of developing their cognitive abilities and capacity to innovate.

Children and young adults between the ages of 6 and 18 are eligible to enter. The submission deadline is 10th July, and all entries are to be made on the Read, Dream, Create official website.

The eligibility criteria, apart from requiring that children independently produce original materials, also stipulate that submitted entries should not contradict human values. Illustrations that express new ideas in a distinct style will receive special appreciation.

Written stories will be judged on the basis of their creative appeal, while 'silent' stories should be depicted through a series of drawings that will together shape the storyline. Participants are free to express their creativity through freestyle drawings and paintings, using pencils, coloured pencils, watercolours and oil paints. The entries should be submitted on A4 or A3 paper and sent to the UAEBBY in soft-copy PDF format.

"The ‘Read, Dream, Create' Creative Writing Competition aims to both challenge and stimulate the cognitive abilities of young people, and raise their awareness of the basic creative arts of writing and illustration. We want to do our best to hone their talent, trigger their creativity, and transform their beautiful thoughts into creative materials. We are empowering children and young adults with literary concepts which will help them express their ideas and visions clearly and creatively in a way they see fit," said Meera Al Naqbi, UAEBBY General Coordinator.

The judging panel will feature a host of Arab experts on creative writing and illustration. Winners of the top three places in the contest will receive exciting prizes.
