Water BMC Survey finds water in South Mumbai dirtiest

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation collected water samples in the city from April 2016 to March 2017; according to the report on these samples, 3.10% of the water supplied from BMC is contaminated.

The report also reveals that South Mumbai receives the city's most amount of dirtiest water (9%).

Even with the water's contamination levels decreasing, cases of E. coli contamination are on the rise.

Agriculture Government shuts down tur dal purchasing centres

The Maharashtra government on Saturday shut down over 300 tur dal buying centres across the state.

This year has witnessed a bumper production of tur dal; when compared to last year's 4.4 lakh metric tonnes, the Maharashtra government has produced 20 lakh metric tonnes this year.

Farmers, however, have opposed this move as the shutting of these centres has left them with excess supply.

Infrastructure Mumbai could be connected to Elephanta by ropeways

The Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) is planning to connect Mumbai with Elephanta islands' Gharpuri caves, a UNESCO-declared world heritage site, via a ropeway.

According to the plan, MbPT would connect the Elephanta Islands to Sewri by an eco-friendly ropeway approximately 8-kilometres long, which would be India's longest ropeway.

Currently, Elephanta Islands can be reached by only launches and speedboats.

Railways Harbour-line trains towards CST delayed by half an hour PC: .cls-2{fill:#9c9c9c;}

Trains running on the harbour line towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) on Monday morning had to halt for half an hour due to a rail fracture between Vashi and Mankhurd stations.

The cracks in the tracks were noticed at Vashi at approximately 8:30 am.

According to commuters, south-bound trains didn't show up for more than 30 minutes.

Rail-fractures are usually caused by temperature fluctuations.

Environment Hungarian woman, family clean Vasai beach

A Hungarian woman residing in Vasai, Zsuzsanna Ferrao, clears the garbage at Vasai beach every Sunday; her husband and two children also help her.

She took the decision after watching children play with garbage on the beach, and has been doing the same since 4 weeks.

A resident of Vasai for 4 years, Zsuzsanna says she considers India as her own country.
