(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN — The Lower House on Sunday endorsed the draft law of people with disabilities for 2017, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The deputies removed an article which stipulated levying a 50 fils tax on each tobacco packet and allocating the money for the Higher Council for Affairs of People with Disabilities.
However, deputies agreed to grant 10 per cent of the Jordanian Charitable Lottery net profit to the Lower House.
Lawmakers rejected providing journalists with legal protection in cases where they report on cases of violence against people with disabilities, while deciding to maintain legal protections for witnesses.
According to the draft law, private shelters will be transformed gradually into day centres.
The draft law is in line with the agreement on people with disabilities signed by Jordan, Petra reported, and its implementation is part of the national strategy to further integrate people with disabilities into the society.
The law and its mandating reasons aim to ensure equal opportunities, without discrimination on the basis of disabilities, while also providing suitable facilities at public institutions and spaces.
Also during the session, Lower House Speaker Atef Tarawneh condemned recent violence against teachers, calling upon the government to take suitable legal action against perpetrators.
Also on Sunday, the Lower House adopted a statement by the House's Palestine Committee supporting the mass hunger strike by Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
The statement demanded the intervention of the Red Cross to stop Israeli violations against the detainees.
