Int'l pledging conf. for Yemen is priority for Kuwait

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GENEVA, April 24 (KUNA) -- Kuwait gives priority to a high-profile international pledging conference for Yemen in Geneva on Tuesday, a senior Kuwaiti diplomat said on Monday.

Participation in the conference is part of the Humanitarian Response Plan 2017, and of Kuwait's commitment to alleviate the sufferings of the Yemeni people, Permanent Delegate to the UN and international organizations in Geneva Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghuneim added.

He also stressed Kuwait's philanthropic work and initiatives around the globe.

A senior Kuwaiti delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah will take part in the meeting, supporting the UN efforts for the Yemeni people.

The Geneva meeting is sponsored by the UN Secretary General Ant?nio Guterres and is co-hosted by the foreign ministries of Switzerland and Sweden.

Chairman of Kuwait's International Islamic Charity Organization (IICO) Abdullah Al-Maatouq will partake in the pledging conference out of eagerness to closely follow up the situation in Yemen, Al-Ghuneim said.

Through the 2017 Humanitarian Response Plan, over 106 humanitarian partners have been providing coordinated assistance to millions of people across Yemen's 22 governorates.

The Geneva conference acquires prime importance after the recent UN reports on a wide scale tragedy in Yemen.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in its latest report that the sufferings of the people in the war-torn country were aggravating and that the state institutions are making for a collapse.

It added that up to million Yemenis have been displaced, with 55 percent of them children who are exposed to attacks.

Yemenis under 18, about 9.6 million people, are in a dire need for health, food, and education relief aid, the UNICEF said in a recent report.

On his part, the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O'Brien said that up to USD 2.1 billion was urgently needed to fulfil the needs of 12 million Yemenis. (end) ta.am.msa
