Tamoor stars as Qatar claim second successive victory


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) All-rounder Tamoor Sajjad smashed a brisk half century to help Qatar register their second successive victory at the ICC World Cricket League Asia Division 1 with a 214-run rout over Bhutan, at Gymkhana Club in Chiang Mai, Thailand, yesterday
Batting at number five, Tamoor laid the platform for Qatar to score a challenging total of 280 all out in 50 overs after the top order batsmen were dismissed early by Bhutan, who elected to field first.
Captain Inam Ul Haq - the Man-of-the-Match in 150-run victory over Kuwait in the first match - yesterday scored 37 runs while his opening partner Qalandar Khan who scored 83 in the last match was out for 7 runs.
When Taimoor came on crease, Qatar were struggling on 68-3 but he batted with confidence for his 76 from 84 balls, including nine fours and a six. He shared 103-run partnership with Zaheer Ibrahim for the sixth wicket. Khurram Shahzad also played a useful knock of 28 from 16 balls down the order.
Defending the target, Qatar continued their fine bowling show and never let the Bhutan batsmen pose any kind of threat by taking quick wickets, eventually bowling them out for 66 in 26.3 overs. Only three of Bhutan batsmen Tenzin Jnr (12), DS Gurung (10) and T Wangchuk (14) could reached the doubles figures.
Mohammad Nadeem was pick of the bowlers for Qatar with figures of 3-17 from 7.3 overs while Mohammad Awais (2-15) and Zaheer (2-3) were the other main wicket-taking bowlers. Tamoor also took a wicket for 18 runs from 7 overs and received Man-of-the-Match award for his role in both sessions of the match. Qatar will now face hosts Thailand tomorrow after a rest day today.
'The team is doing good but they should not be complacent, the Qatar Cricket Association (QCA) Operation Manager who is accompanying the team in Thailand told The Peninsula from Chiang Mai.
'Thailand is a good side and we will have to continue to give our best in all departments of the game.
'So far we are happy with the performance of the players. They are looking in good rhythm, he added.
Meanwhile, in other matches of the tournament yesterday, Kuwait handed a 293-drubbing to China on D/L Method. They scored 460-7 but the target was reduced to 351 runs from 36 overs after rain reduced the match. China, however, were bowled out for 57 in 16.4 overs.
In yet another match, Bahrain claimed winning points after a 138 victory over Thailand.
