UAE- Hazza bin Hamdan bin Zayed honours winners of 9th edition of Braille Reading Competition

ABU DHABI, 16th April, 2017 (WAM) -- H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Hamdan bin Zayed has honoured the winners of the 9th edition of the Braille Reading Competition at the Al Raha Beach Hotel in Abu Dhabi. The contest aims to enable children to gain knowledge and display their social skills.

Since the competition was established in 2006, awareness among the public about visually impaired people and their potential socially or in the workplace has been increased.

The recognition came during a ceremony organised by the Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs, represented by the Printing Press for the Visually Impaired, under the slogan, "Everyone Reads".

H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while accompanied by Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Health Authority; Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Education Council, and Na'ema Al Mansouri, Manager of the Printing Press for the Visually Impaired, honoured the winners and offered them certificates of appreciation and financial awards. The project's partners and participating publishers were also honoured.

A total of 81 people participated in the project's 9th edition, including UAE nationals and residents from Sudan, Yemen, Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar, Lebanon, Mauritania and Germany.

Five students participated in the contest's first level for the 6 to 9-year-old age group, where Ami bint El Hadi from Mauritania won first place. Second place went to Moza Abdullah Al Hammadi from the UAE, while Alaa Mohammed Sadiq from the UAE won third place.

Some 21 students participated in the second level for the 10 to 12-year-old age group, in which Ghaith Mohammed Al Ghafli from the UAE won first place, and Isabella Jesse from Germany won first runner-up.

Eleven students participated in the third level for the 13 to 15-year-old age group, with first place going to Naeema Saeed Al Darei from the UAE, and Walaa Mohamed Ali Al Farsani from Bahrain won first runner-up.

Twenty students competed in the fourth level for the 16 to 18-year-old age group, in which Wafaa Awad Mabrouk from the UAE won first place, while Abdulaziz Humaidi Al Maqareh from Qatar won first runner-up.

A total of 25 students competed in the fifth level for the 19 and above age group, with first place going to Carine Saleh Kiwan from Lebanon.

The "Everyone Can Read" braille reading project is considered the first project of its kind in the Arab world which aims to enrich the culture of people with blindness and improve their lives by reading a series of meaningful stories.

The project received the Khalifa Award for Education 2011 in the field of innovative educational projects and programmes in the UAE.
