(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat – Police in the city of Fez have reportedly arrested approximately 746 phony, unauthorized tourist guides.
The police campaign began in January with the aim of protecting tourists. Their report found that the detainees had previously been charged with illegally guiding and harassing the tourists as they strolled through the tourist sites and hotels of the city.
The detainees were referred to the court after the investigation, which was conducted by Fez Judicial Police.
The operation of identifying and arresting false tourist guides will continue in an effort to put an end to this phenomenon.
The police also consider the campaign to be an important safeguard for tourists following the discovery of cases revealing that some tourists have been subjected to blackmail by these false tourist guides.
The increase in this phenomenon is thought to be one of the reasons that led to a decrease in the number of tourists visiting Morocco.
Over the past few years, Morocco has stepped up its efforts to attract a large number of tourists back to the country.
The Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) said earlier this week that Morocco is counting on an additional 600,000 tourists in 2017. This growth would allow Morocco to receive reach nearly 11 million tourists this year.
In 2016, Morocco attracted 10.33 million tourists, marking a slight increase of 1.5 percent compared to 2015. This growth is due to good performances linked to the diversification of the issuing markets, notably China, Russia, and the United States.
