Kuwait- UN Chief warns climate change poses threat to peace, development

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, March 24 (KUNA) -- UN warned that climate change poses unprecedented threat to peace, prosperity and to all of the Sustainable Development Goals.

In a high-level General Assembly meeting held on climate change, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres underlined that human activity is causing dangerous global warming, stressing that "we are dealing with scientific facts, not politics." He said Climate Change is a massive opportunity that no one cannot afford to miss.

He reaffirmed that the Paris Agreement that was adopted in December 2015, is unique in its universality, with every single government having signed it.

The pact entered force in less than a year. To date more than 130 Parties have ratified it, and the numbers are growing monthly.

Also addressing the event, General Assembly President Peter Thomson said that he had recently met with the Secretary General of the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Petteri Taalas, who confirmed that the world is currently on track towards a 3 to 4 Celsius increase in global temperatures.

The General Assembly convene a High-Level Event entitled "Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Agenda" in collaboration with the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The meeting highlighted synergies between Climate Change and the 2030 Agenda. (end) mao.mb
