(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar will celebrate the eighth GCC oral health promotion week which starts on Saturday and ends on March 31. The theme of the health promotion week, ‘Teeth, health and beauty', aims to educate the community about the health problems associated with oral and dental diseases and encourage the adoption of a positive behaviour for oral and dental care.
The GCC oral health promotion week is being observed in Qatar by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) for the seven consecutive year in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Interior (MoI), Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Hamad Medical Corp, Primary Health Care Corp, Aspetar, Shafallah Centre for Children with Special Needs, Qatar University and College of the North Atlantic Qatar (CNA-Q).
Students in preparatory, elementary and secondary schools will attend the celebrations and visit 16 healthcare centers for dental examinations and presentations on oral care.
The primary health care dental staff will be visiting select schools to provide lectures on oral health, and teach the students on the best way for oral care.
The department of medical services at the MoI will host an awareness day for dental clinics, and CNA-Q an educational day on oral health for college students.
The results of the first national oral health survey conducted by the MoPH in 2011 and published in 2013 in collaboration with the World Health Organisation showed that nearly 72% of school students aged six years and 54% of school students aged 12 years and 55% of school students aged 15 years have dental caries. The survey interviewed 3,248 school students representing 316 public and private schools.
This led the decision makers to form a national committee on April 1, 2015, comprising all relevant parties to develop a national Oral Health strategy for Qatar.
The National Oral Health Strategy Committee is to implement the second National Oral Health Survey.
The celebration of the eighth GCC oral health promotion week is part of the Gulf Co-operation Council's plan, which includes a unified Gulf week in all the countries to address the spread of oral diseases in general and dental caries in particular.
