Oman- Mövenpick to make debut in sultanate with hotel in Ghala


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Swiss hotel chain Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts will debut in Oman with a 247-room property in Ghala in Muscat. Owned by the Civil Service Employees Pension Fund (CSEPF), the project will also include serviced hotel apartments and a retail and business hub.

CSEPF has initiated the plan as part of its drive to diversify its investments and developthe tourism sector in the sultanate.

The multi-purpose investment building in Ghala will include the four-star hotel, serviced hotel apartments, shopping areas, food corner, fully serviced office spaces and retail outlets.

The building, which stretches over 146,962sq m, includes a floor dedicated to shops. Four floors have been assigned for offices, five floors for serviced hotel rooms and three basement levels for car parking.

The hotel spans an area over 3,782sq m and includes 247 rooms and suites, 50 deluxe apartments, food outlets, rooms for meetings, conferences and events and a health club.

'Mövenpick, a renowned hotel operator, has been selected to be the operator for this hotel. The hotel will also be the first to be operated by the company in the sultanate,' CSEPF said in a statement.

The project also provides 3,897sq m for international outlets and brands, in addition to restaurants and coffee shops.

Headquartered in Switzerland, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is owned by Mövenpick Holding (66.7 per cent) and the Kingdom Holding Company (KHC) (33.3 per cent).

The deal comes after Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, chairman, KHC visited Oman in February this year.

During his visit he met H H Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers, and H E Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, among other officials in the sultanate.

KHC also has investments in other hotel chains like The Four Seasons, Fairmont, Raffles and Swissôtel among others.

Mövenpick already has a deal with Muriya, a joint venture between Orascom Development Holdings and Omran, to develop the Mövenpick Resort & Spa Salalah within the Salalah Beach project.

The project consists of a 391-room five-star hotel. Although signed in 2007, the hotel is among the future hotel projects at Salalah Beach.
