Regional media should shed light on positive issues -- call at conf.

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) By Ayoub Khaddaj and Wasim haidar BEIRUT, March 22 (KUNA) -- The media in regional nations should shed light on positive affairs instead of focusing on negative news about wars and terrorism and crises, according to a top Chinese media figure Cai Mingzhao, President of the Chinese News Agency (Xinhua), urged in a statement to KUNA on sidelines of a conference about "media as promoter of civilizations and dialogue link-up," media outlets in the regional countries to shed light on positive issues, instead of focusing on negative news such as wars, terrorist attacks and economic crises.

He underscored necessity of broadcasting news that "concern our states and peoples and serve the Middle east for consolidating stability and development and peace." Moreover, he noted significance of China's cooperation with Arab states at the media level to shed light on useful and good news.

For his part, Muhannad Suleiman Al-Naimi, the general director of the Bahraini news agency, affirmed that the convention addressed issues such as the media role in civilizations' dialogue.

Nabila Al-Zayati, in charge of the Italian news agency's projects in the Middle East, underlined in remarks to KUNA role the media should play for boosting global-level dialogue in shadow of conflicts and mounting challenges resulting from rapid technological development.

Dr. George Sadaqa, dean of the Lebanese Faculty of Information of the Lebanese University, shed light on the financial crisis gripping the local media, resulting in closure of renowned newspapers and lay-off of hundreds of journalists.

"Democracy cannot live without the media and the political system cannot persist in a sound fashion without free media," he said.

Alin Farah, a journalist, said the local media problem is result of the deteriorating economic conditions in the country and mounting dependence on the electronic social media to follow up on news.

However, she has cautioned that news and reports on the social media largely lack credibility.

The official National News Agency (NNA) organized the conference on Monday, and Tuesday, with participation of a large number of media figures, academics and experts from Arab foreign countries. (end) ayb.wsm.rk
