KUWAIT CITY, March 18: The flag of the 6th GCC Women Games was handed over to Kuwait during the closing ceremony of the 5th GCC Women Games which was held Doha, Qatar. The 6th GCC Women Games is due to be hosted in Kuwait in 2019.
The flag was received by the Head of the Organizing Committee of the GCC Women Sports Sheikha Naeema Al-Ahmad Al- Sabah. The selection of Kuwait to hold the next edition was made during the committee's meeting, which was headed by Sheikha Al-Ahmad and held twice in Doha. Several other recommendations were made during the meeting such as to host the games once every four years, to unify the championship terms and conditions for both men and women, to organize men and women's games after Kuwait's GCC games, to recommend all organizing committees to hold competitions for women in all sports and to list competitions for amateurs.
In the final basketball match between the Qatari and Bahraini teams, the host team managed to defeat the Bahraini Team with a score of 67-50 baskets. Sheikha Al-Ahmad and Secretary General of Qatar's Olympics Committee Dr Thani Al-Kuwari awarded gold medals to the Qatari team.
In second place was Bahrain followed by the United Arab Emirates in third place. Attending the basketball finals was the Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development HE Sheikha Hind Bint Hamad al-Thani.
The games were held under her patronage. Qatari Team managed to win the title of the 5th GCC Women Games after pocketing 60 medals in total (21 gold, 20 silver and 19 bronze) followed by the Bahraini Team in second place with 41 medals (14 gold, 18 silver and 10 bronze), the United Arab Emirates Team in third place with 32 medals (12 gold, 8 silver and 12 bronze), and Omani Team in fourth place with 32 medals (10 gold, 9 silver and 17 bronze).
This games of year was held for the first time in Qatar and had ten activities — athletics, Taekwondo, basketball, volleyball, handball, fencing, archery, table tennis, bowling and chess. It witnessed participation of a total of 891 sportswomen and the administrative and technical teams representing four GCC countries.
