Preparations in place to host World Challenge Cup gymnastics

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Organising Committee of the 10th FIG World Challenge Cup met Qatar Gymnastics Federation (QGF) President Ali al- Hitmi yesterday to discuss the preparations for the annual event, which will be held from March 22-25 at the Aspire Dome.
With less than two weeks to go for the championship, the members held a series of meetings, which was also attended by Abeer Ali Abdullah al-Buainain, the Assistant Secretary General, QGF and Anis Saoud, Tournament Director.
Al-Hitmi confirmed that the 10th edition of the championship will be held at the Aspire Academy. 'The eagerly-awaited event is just a few days away and we have called the meeting to assess our readiness for the top event, al-Hitmi said.
More than 240 gymnasts will display their skills the highest number of entries in the event's history. Gymnasts from Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Algeria will also join athletes from hosts Qatar.
'Around 240 gymnasts will feature this time and we have confirmed entries from more than 30 countries, al-Hitmi said.
'The significant addition to this year's event will be the participation of gymnasts from five Arab nations including Qatar, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Algeria, the QGF president added.
Three years ago, Qatar won the rights to host the 48th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in October 2018, and al-Hitmi said the World Challenge Cup will help them prepare for the mega event.
'This tournament is a great opportunity for us to test our readiness for the World Championships that will be held in 2018. The global gymnastics family the FIG has great appreciation for our events. We have to continue to work hard in delivering an amazing tournament this month and in the future, he said.
In yesterday's meeting, the sub-committees also provided their reports on the work completed so far. 'We discussed matters that needed my attention. We have some work to do but overall we feel all logistical matters have been finalised our marketing committee is also busy promoting the championship, al-Hitmi noted.
The QGF president emphasised on the roles played by the volunteers and said they will be trained ahead of the World Championship. 'The other main point we discussed was the assembly and work chart of the volunteers. We know that we need to give our group of volunteers the right amount of first-hand experience since Qatar will host the World Championships next year. You will see a lot more volunteers this time around as we have already started preparing for the 2018 World Championships. We will closely monitor the performances of the volunteers since this is a great chance for us to shake off the cobwebs, if at all, al-Hitmi said.
'I have addressed the heads of the committees working to complete our preparations for the March 22-25 championship. I have underlined the work that needs their attention. They know for continued success, we have to work together and round the clock, he pointed out.
